Why our cowhides come from Brazil

Every cowhide in our collection comes from Brazil. Here is why, and why we go there ourselves.

Cattle that graze outdoors

Most Brazilian cattle graze outdoors on pasture; only around 7.5% are finished in feedlots. The hides are a by-product of the meat industry: no animal is raised for its skin, and turning the hide into a rug means nothing goes to waste.

Tanned and finished in Brazil

Our hides are tanned and finished in Brazil, at a tannery with its own water treatment facility on site. The result is soft, supple leather with a short, smooth coat of about 0.5 to 1.5 cm.

Chosen by hand

We travel to Brazil to choose our cowhides ourselves. We go through the stacks by hand, looking for a beautiful coat, a good shape and a pattern that lies well once the hide is flat. We buy directly, without distributors in between, which is how we keep the quality high and the prices fair.

Photographed one by one

Back home we measure each hide and photograph it on its own. The one in the photos is exactly the one that arrives at your door.
