How to Maintain a Sheepskin Rug
Sheepskins are naturally very resistant to dirt, but to maintain their beautiful appearance, care must be taken.
First, the sheepskin rug should be regularly and thoroughly shaken out – just like with your furniture, fabric particles can remain in the fibres, where unwanted mites can develop. Leather products also tend to absorb various odours quickly, which is why it's important to air them out regularly.
It's not impossible to wash a sheepskin rug. Sometimes, a more intensive wash may even be necessary. Some owners say you can wash them in the washing machine without much effort, as long as the programme doesn’t exceed 40 degrees Celsius and is set to a gentle wool cycle. However, manufacturers generally advise against this, as fully soaking the rug can lead to all sorts of deformities. The safest method of cleaning is dry cleaning – for example, using a shampoo or detergent specially formulated for wool, where only the wool fibres are gently moistened while the leather remains dry. The rug should be dried at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and other heat sources. Finally, the sheepskin rug should be thoroughly brushed using a special brush designed for this purpose.
By brushing the wool of your sheepskin rug with a specialist brush, you ensure it doesn’t tangle and you restore its fresh appearance!
Don’t skip this step if you want to avoid matting or excessive shedding. Otherwise, the sheepskin rug may lose its natural beauty and no longer serve as the lovely decorative piece it once was when you first bought it.
