How to choose a wool blanket: merino, camel or cashmere

A good wool blanket is the thing you reach for every evening. Here is how to choose yours.

Merino, camel or cashmere?

  • Merino: one of the finest wools there is, soft against the skin and lovely every day.
  • Merino with camel: a wool surface of 90% merino and 10% camel hair, for a fuller, extra cosy feel.
  • Merino with cashmere: a wool surface of 97% merino and 3% cashmere, silky, smooth and light.

1-ply or 2-ply?

A 1-ply blanket has one layer of wool: light, airy and easy to drape, lovely for warmer nights and every season in between. A 2-ply blanket has two layers joined together: fuller and warmer, for cold nights. Some 2-ply blankets have wool on both sides; others have a soft cotton reverse, printed with a pattern.

Which size?

Think about where it will go. A small blanket is lovely for a child or an armchair, a throw drapes nicely over the sofa or the end of the bed, and a large blanket covers a double bed. Each blanket’s page shows its sizes with the exact measurements. Our full-size blankets can also be used like a duvet, with or without a cover.

Reading the composition

On our blankets the composition is listed per layer, for example “Wool surface: 100% merino wool · Base: 100% polyester”. The base is a fine, elastic mesh that the wool is woven into: it holds the wool firmly in place, so the blanket keeps its shape for years. Everything soft on top is natural wool.

Certified and mulesing-free

Our wool blankets are certified to STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® in product class I, the class set for baby articles, and our pure merino pile blankets are made by a Woolmark licensee. The maker confirms in a signed statement that all its wool is mulesing-free. Each product page shows its certificate, with a link to check it.
