Care instructions for wool

Everyday care

Wool is naturally self cleaning. Regular airing keeps your blanket light and fresh without frequent washing.

  • Air the blanket outside on a covered line on a regular basis and avoid direct sunlight.
  • Gently shake it so dust comes away and the fibres can breathe.
  • The lanolin in the wool repels dirt and odours so light airing is usually enough.

Washing and professional cleaning

When a deeper clean is needed use a gentle wool cycle or choose professional care so softness and shape are preserved.

  • Machine wash on the wool cycle at 30 °C with a mild liquid wool detergent.
  • Do not iron. Wool fibres spring back by themselves.
  • Use a tumble dryer only if there is a special wool programme.
  • Professional care (recommended): Instead of washing the blanket yourself you can take it to dry cleaning (“P”) or an eco cleaning service (“F”) every 6–12 months. This is optional but a gentle way to help it stay beautiful for longer.

FAQs about wool blankets

Short answers about comfort, care and why wool makes such a difference.

How are wool blankets different from synthetic blankets?

Wool is a natural and breathable fibre that helps regulate temperature. It keeps you warm when it is cold and feels pleasantly cool when it is warm. It does not trap moisture or odours the way synthetics can and is naturally resistant to dust and bacteria.

Can I use a wool blanket all year round?

Yes. Wool adapts to your body climate so it feels comfortable in every season. It is light enough for summer nights and warm enough for winter.

Does wool itch?

Usually not, especially when the fibres are fine, such as Merino, camel hair or cashmere blends. These feel soft and gentle on the skin.

Some people simply have more sensitive nerve endings, so even superfine Merino fibres around 17 to 19 microns can cause a mild tingle now and then. It is not an allergy, just a natural reaction to texture.

If your skin is very sensitive, camel hair or cashmere blends often help because they feel smoother and finer.

For most people the feeling fades as the fibres soften further with use.

Are wool blankets suitable for sensitive skin or babies?

Yes. Merino and cashmere blends are naturally gentle, breathable and free from harsh synthetics, which makes them ideal for delicate or sensitive skin.

Do wool blankets smell?

You may notice a very light natural scent when a blanket is new or slightly damp. This comes from lanolin, the wool’s natural wax, which helps the fibres stay fresh and clean.

A short time airing outdoors, without direct sun, usually clears the scent completely. Make sure the blanket is fully dry before storing it and avoid plastic. A breathable cotton bag is better. If needed, a gentle wool wash with mild liquid wool detergent freshens it up perfectly.

Do wool blankets shed or pill?

A little surface fluff at the start is normal and settles with use. Try to avoid heavy friction and skip fabric softener. A wool comb or a fabric shaver keeps the surface neat.

How do I care for a wool blanket?

Wool is naturally self-cleaning, so regular airing keeps the blanket fresh without constant washing. When a deeper clean is needed, these tips help:

  • Airing outdoors regularly, avoiding direct sun, and giving it a light shake helps the fibres breathe.
  • Lanolin naturally repels dirt and odours, so gentle airing is often enough.
  • For washing, use the wool cycle at 30 °C with a mild liquid wool detergent. Low spin, ideally inside a laundry bag.
  • Dry flat, away from heat and sunlight. Only use a tumble dryer if it has a dedicated wool setting.
  • Do not iron. Wool fibres lift back into shape on their own.
  • Professional cleaning: dry clean “P” or eco clean “F” every 6 to 12 months depending on use.
What is the difference between Merino, camel hair and cashmere?

Merino is soft, fine and great for everyday comfort. Camel hair feels a little warmer with a buttery soft texture. Cashmere is the lightest and most silky. Blends bring their strengths together.

Are wool blankets environmentally friendly?

Yes. Wool is renewable and biodegradable, lasts for many years and needs fewer washes. This saves water and avoids microplastics compared to synthetics.

Are wool blankets good as gifts?

Definitely. A fine wool blanket is timeless, practical and personal. It is a gift that brings warmth and comfort every day.

Why are wool blankets more expensive than synthetic ones?

Worth the difference: natural fibres require careful sourcing and real craftsmanship. They feel better, regulate temperature and last longer, offering lasting comfort day after day.
