Description

As the name suggests, Icelandic sheepskin comes from the Icelandic sheep, which have much longer hair – approximately 12–18 cm – than European sheep.

The Icelandic sheep is a breed that belongs to the Northern European short-tailed sheep. It was brought to Iceland by the Vikings between 1100 and 1200.

Icelandic sheep are a medium to large breed with relatively short legs and a very broad back. The wool can come in up to 17 different colours, ranging from white to unique spotted patterns. Highly resistant to the cold, the Icelandic sheep played a vital role in the survival of the Icelandic people during harsh winters by providing food and clothing.
